The Margery L. Orr Memorial Scholarship Fund helps academically talented, financially needy graduates of Lead-Deadwood High School obtain an education at a four-year college. Seniors who rank in the top 20 percent of their class scholastically, on the basis of cumulative grade point average through the fall semester of their senior year, are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Application forms are available from LDHS counselors. Each scholarship is a award of $1,000 per year, which can be used at any accredited four-year college or university.
Among the applicants who meet the academic requirement stated above, the chief criterion for determining the recipient of the scholarship is financial need, determined primarily by the applicant’s family income and any extraordinary financial situations facing the family.
Here is how one scholarship recipient described her situation:
“I have Type I Diabetes, and the high cost of supplies and medications greatly hinders my family’s ability to contribute to my college education. My mother is a single parent who receives no monetary support from my father, which also makes it difficult for my mother to finance my education.”
This young woman graduated sixth in her class, with a grade point average of 3.9 out of 4.0. There is no question that she could be successful in college – if she could afford to go.
